Pécsvárad
Description
Pécsvárad with 4000 inhabitants is located at the foot of the eastern Mecsek Mountains. It emerged from a Benedictine monastery that was founded by King Stefan I and became a center of the Hungarian state and church development. In the 13th century a monastery castle was added, which today is counted among Hungary's most important architectural monuments from the Middle Ages. The old keep (now a hotel), the 15 meter long nave of the collegiate church and the frescoed choir have been preserved in the best possible way. The castle museum, however, is located in the castle from the 18th century; it shows archaeological finds from the castle and abbey area.
